IN MEMORIUM Ludwine M. Messiaen (February 24, 2024)

It is with deep sorrow that the College for Genetics and Rare Diseases announces the passing of Professor Ludwine M. Messiaen (February 24, 2024).

She was one of the pioneers of molecular genetic testing in Belgium. She earned her PhD from Ghent University in January 1990, specializing in Biological and Biomedical Sciences.  In 2003 she moved to the USA and was appointed as Laboratory Director of the Medical Genomics lab at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. She was considered as the world expert in molecular testing of neurofibromatosis type 1 and related diseases.

She helped thousands of patients by detecting the underlying genetic cause of their disease. Moreover, professor Messiaen's unwavering dedication, enthusiasm, and groundbreaking research have transformed our comprehension of NF, leading to advancements in treatment and care. In 2018, she received the Children's Tumor Foundation's Friedrich von Recklinghausen Award, recognizing her immense contributions in the field of neurofibromatosis.

We will remember her as an inspiring and dedicated geneticist, and as a colorful, creative and warm person.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
